Can a person truly earn money online answering surveys? -

I have heard and read that there are ways available on line for a person to earn money to answer surveys. Is this true? I tried investigating on line, but it seems like you have to pay a fee in order to get a list of companies to get on a mailing list to. Should I trust this? Is there a means in which I can get on legitimate mailing lists without having to pay?
